Mercutio is not mentioned in Act 3 Scene 5.  It is in Act 3 Scene 1 where Mercutio is spoiling for a fight with the Capulets.  They run into Tybalt who hurls insults at Romeo. Romeo refuses to fight with him to the point that Mercutio takes offence and begins to fight with Tybalt. Romeo steps between them giving Tybalt the opportunity to stab under Romeo's arm striking Mercutio a killing wound.

Mercutio curses both the houses of Capulet and Montague with his dying breath.  Romeo then kills Tybalt in a fit of passion over the death of his best friend, Mercutio.
