Romeo, who is dejected because Rosaline refuses to reciprocate his love for her meets Juliet at the banquet hosted by her father. Both Romeo and Juliet ,inspite of the enmity between their families, fall in love with one another. Atonce, Romeo goes to Friar Laurence and asks him to get them both married.
Friar Laurence expresses shock and surprise on hearing this for he knew that till now Romeo was madly in love with Rosaline. He wonders how Romeo could have so quickly abandoned Rosaline and expresses his disapproval:"young men's love then lies/Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes." Friar Laurence, thus doubts Romeo's sincerity and faithfulness.
He wonders how Roemo could be so fickle:"And art thou changed?" and remarks that the real reason women are fickle is that men are more inconstant and disloyal: "Women may fall, when there's no strength in men."
Friar Laurence does not buy Romeo's argument that he changed his affections from Rosaline to Juliet because Rosaline did not bother to reciprocate his love for her. However, he concludes by telling the "young waverer" that he is ready to help him in marrying Juliet so that the two hostile families will be united:"For this alliance may so happy prove/To turn your households' rancour to pure love."
