Which scenes of the 2 films(modern or classical) of Romeo & Juliet could have done better?

The first scene that could have been done better is from the Zefferelli production of "Romeo and Juliet" from the 1960s.   Act I, scene v in which Romeo and Juliet met at the Capulet's party is too drawn out.  Romeo stares at Juliet for a great deal of time, cutting through the crowd and looking over the shoulders of other people as they watch a young man sing the movie's theme song.  This scene takes close to 15 minutes and the entire time the audience watches the same thing over and over and the song is never-ending.

The scene from the 1996 version of "Romeo and Juleit" that could have been changed is Act I, scene iv as the Montague boys are getting ready to go to the Capulet's party.  Mercutio, who is dressed in drag, gives Romeo a pill (presumably drugs) and Romeo has extreme hallucinations as Mercutio and the party guests sing and dance.  The movie truly could have done without that scene since it has nothing to do with the play or anything within the play.

I agree with poster #2 as to the Zefferelli production. The party scene does not do justice to the atmosphere of the play itself. I also think that Mercutio's Queen Mab monologue could have been redone. There's too much cut out, & it almost makes the character seem mentally unstable, which isn't supported anywhere else in the movie.

As for the 1996 version, I think the death scene is too indulgent. It's almost a glorification of the mistakes these teenagers have made.

I have seen about 7 different video versions. I think some of the scenes in all of them were, in agreement with Poster #2 that some scenes were drawn out and some were not long enough. That might be the director's prerogative.
