Cassie lives with her parents, siblings, and her grandmother on their own piece of land. The last detail is important and unusual for an African American family in the South during the Depression. Her mother is a schoolteacher until she loses her job for "defacing" schoolbooks that are insulting to the black students, including her own children.

Cassie's home life is warm and nurturing, though strict. She has some adult responsibilities, such as working the fields, and is expected to know how to behave around adults of all races. Over the course of the story, Cassie learns many lessons, some unpleasant, that force her to grow up quickly. Her parents, her grandmother, and her community are supportive throughout, however, and their love and guidance help her to see the hard realities of her situation without becoming bitter or angry.
