Posted by writergal06 on Monday October 5, 2009 at 3:26 PMPaul's mother is dissatisfied with her life because they have no money to buy the nice, pretty things that she wants. She desires to live outside of her means, but her husband cannot make that happen to her. As she continues to spend, the house continues to want more, symbolizing her unquenching desire for things. Paul's mother also blames her husband's "bad luck" for their current state.
