It is primarily written for the reader to identify with, if a common chord is struck. Indeed, it is the universality of the poem that is its primary appeal. Who hasn't felt lonely, frustrated, abandoned, or alienated at one time or another?
This poem has been compared in both content and tone to T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland." If you are looking for a comparison, why not check this out?
