Rob Roy | Chapter 14 Summary
Frank is becoming more accepted in the Osbaldistone family. His uncle utilizes his education in the manner of a secretary. He has gained the respect of his cousins through his expertise with horses. Thorncliff alone seems to dislike him, most likely from jealousy over the time Frank spends with Die.
In a conversation with Andrew Fairservice, the gardener, Frank learns that Morris has gone to Parliament in London to report the robbery. He testifies that he had identified Frank, but had not been given justice by the local magistrate, through the influence of Campbell. After much discussion, Parliament decides that they cannot trust someone of Morris’s rank in an accusation against a family such as the Osbaldistones.
Frank desires to hear more about this, so he asks Andrew if he can speak with his relative, a peddler, from whom he heard the story. While waiting for the peddler, Frank sees a light shining in the library, assuming that Die is studying. He sees two shadows and wonders who her companion is. Previously, he had advised a chaperone in the person of one of the servants, Martha, so he tries to convince himself that it is she who is with Die.
When the peddler comes, he validates Andrew’s account of the debate in Parliament, providing a newspaper article and other documents. In the article, Morris relates that he believed Campbell to have been the more active of the robbers, something that Frank himself had contemplated.
