Who is the narrator in the following quote? What is he alluding to?

 

"What will you say? A living man spoke these lines? He sharpened a quill with his small pen knife to scribe these things in the sloe or lampblack? At some reckonable and entabled moment? He is coming to steal my eyes. To seal my mouth with dirt."

 

I know there is some theological theme...this quote (pg. 261-paperback) follows the his allusion to the salitter--the essence of God--leaving the earth.

I just need a little help on identifying the deeper elements here. Thank you so much.
