Posted by ask996 on Saturday September 5, 2009 at 6:33 PMThe poem "Richard Cory" is structured in such a way as to emphasize the differences between the rich and the poor. We know that Richard lives in the more affluent "uptown" because it talks about " . . .whenever he goes downtown." When the narrator talks about Cory being a gentleman from "sole to crown" we realize he means head to toe, but a crown is also something that a royal would wear, and Cory is referred to as "imperially slim."
The rhyme scheme of the poem is A-B-A-B for each stanza and it almost seems to be used to lull the reader into an expected pattern so that they are shocked by the abrupt and unexpected ending to the poem.
