The Return of the Soldier | Characters
At times, the characters in The Return of the Soldier are not examples of well-drawn, developed characters, but aspects of a class in society. Kitty Ellis certainly is more concerned with social position and her place in society, but this seems to be all of Kitty. Her love, if it can be called love, for her wounded husband is based on her need for him to regain his memory. Readers learn in the course of the novel that Kitty was not Chris's first love, but rather he had planned to marry Margaret Allington whom he quarreled with.
