In "The Remarkable Journey of Prince Jen" by Lloyd Alexander what was the saddle used for and who gave it as a gift?

please help me. I need to know, i have no idea, i read it 3 times and cant figure it out at all. I just got out of RSP english and now i am in regular!!! If i get a bad grade on this i will have to go back in RSP and my grade will go down as a D-

    The saddle was meant to be a gift to the king of T'ien-kuo. It was selected by Master Wu. However, Li Kwang lusted after it, and swapped it for his own saddle. Once he did, he couldn't control his horse. His horse carries him to the Lady of Fearful Awakenings, and he and his men are turned to stone.
