The movies operates on the principle that human eye continues to retain the vision it sees for a period of approximately one twelfth of a second. Therefore if we take pictures of a moving scene at the rate of twelve or more photo frames per second, and project these photographs on a screen one after another in quick succession at the rate of at least twelve frames per second, the projected pictures will appear as a continuously moving picture.
The tape in the reel contains the pictures that are projected on screen. The projection is done by winding the tape from one reel to another, with the tape passing in between through the projection mechanism of the projector. This tape also contains the recording of the sound in the movie, enabling sound to be played simultaneously with movie projection.
