"The Great Mountains" is the second story in Steinbeck's "The Red Pony".  Jody is bored.  He is in a bad mood and he kills a bird and then hides it so no grown-ups will know what he did.  His imagination leads him to wonder who lives in the mountains and what they are like.  Jody is growing up and is wanting to "spread his wings," and leave the ranch where he lives.  It is natural that his dreams, at 12 -years-old would wander toward the wild looking mountains he can see from his ranch.
