   The protagonist in The Red Pony is young Jody Tiflin who lives on a ranch with his mother and father. Jody is no longer the child he had once been, but he is not yet the man he will become. The novel is an example of an initiation story because from the beginning to the end of the narrative, Jody grows up in some very significant ways. Through the death of one pony and the birth of a new colt, Jody learns important truths about life, death, and loss, and all he learns leads him into maturity. By the conclusion of the novel, Jody Tiflin has lost much of his childhood innocence by facing and dealing with realities unknown to him previously.
