In the third section of Steinbeck's "The Red Pony," Jody is given another chance at having a pony. He watches the mating of his father's mare to a stallion, and waits for the mare to become pregnant. A year passes and Jody almost gives up, but then it becomes apparent that the mare is pregnant. As the mare gives birth, there are complications and Billy has to kill the mare in order to birth the colt successfully. The colt is born, but what should have been an exciting experience is tainted by the death of the mare.
