Life in 19th century America was complex and changing. On the technological level, the industrial revolution was spreading through the nation, linking eastern and western United States with the railroad in mid-century. To get places, you walked or road a horse (or carriage). Most people never traveled, or took one big trip (say, across the country or the ocean to move). On the social level, different levels and types of cultures mixed together. You might have a well-developed city on the coast, raw farm land in the middle states, and a largely intact native tribe still following older ways.

People lived with their families, and most people still lived on farms. They grew most of their own food.
