It's a very busy street with businesses lined up on either side. The sidewalks are packed with people walking. Holmes takes note of the different businesses that are located there, and then he and Watson leave.
This is an important clue, not only for Holmes, but for the reader as well. We are told what types of businesses are on the street, and this will be very important in solving the mystery. When reading a Sherlock Holmes mystery, take note of the things that seem insignificant or ordinary because these are the very things that usually help us to solve the crime.
