Like the officers and soldiers that now surround him, he remembers how he was ready and willing to follow along behind the "lady upon the white horse, or the band in its faded chariot." As a little boy, the parade made a grand impression upon him, and now it reminds him of the circumstances at hand. The "lines of expectant people" who crowd the streets waiting for the parade to begin remind him of the line of infantry, anxiously awaiting attack from their foe. For the youth, the parade was an awakening moment of his childhood; the upcoming battle will be his first great experience as a soldier--and as a man.
