There is no rule that says you must fight in a war to become a war reporter.  There are many examples today of "War Correspondents" who have never served in the military.  Crane spent two years in a Military College, and "although Crane never served in battle himself, he studied extensively and interviewed many war veterans before writing Courage. In 1897, he was shipped to Cuba on a writing assignment and was shipwrecked near Florida. While there, he met his future wife, and together they served as war correspondents in the Greco-Turkish War of 1897. Crane ultimately used the experience to write Active Service, one of his last novels."
