Question:
Can you explain how "The Red Badge of Courage" is full of such well written observations?
Can you also explain how Stephen Crane went on to become war reporter later, but never fought in the civil war?

He interviewed many civil war veterans for his book "The Red Badge of Courage". He read their diaries and memoirs. He also read war stories by other writers, especially those of Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy. Many other people has been impressed by the quality of his observations about war but you can also see some of this talent in his short story "The Open Boat". If you look check out the following link, you can find Crane's newspaper description of the same event in a piece called "The Sinking of the Commodore." Crane was a part of this event, but his descriptions were also created by interviewing the survivors and witnesses of the event itself.
