Could you be more specific about author's style? Are you referring to 3 types of literary techniques, or are you referring to 3 different styles of diction (gothic, romantic, etc.). The following is both an example of metaphor and epithets. A metaphor is a comparison; an epithet is a descriptive phrase: They were going to look at war, the red animal--war, the blood-swollen god. Calling war "the red animal" and a "blood-swollen" god is giving epithets to it. Also, to comparison to animals and to a powerful god makes readers better understand the nature and effects of war.
