What are some examples of rhetorical terms that develop the story and other themes?

I have to write journals of how rhetorical terms, syntax,diction and tone are used in the story but I am having trouble pointing these things out. I think I am making it more complicated than it really is..

    I think the most straight forward and direct way to approach this is to analyze different sections or scenes in the book and examine how the author drives their point home in their writing.  This can be done by picking a scene or a section, and analyze the style of writing (How is the author expressing their intent?  Short, choppy sentences?  Long, descriptive sentences?  Is it in third person point of view or is it a dialogue?).  The next thing that can be done in this section is examine the tone of the scene- What general mood is evoked or brought out in the scene and what tools does the author use in order to do it?  Finally, examine if the author employs any figurative language, such as comparisons that use similes or metaphors or personification, as well as images, mental pictures, that are used.  Write the answers to these questions in your journal as you examine different scenes.  In doing this, you will present an analysis of the book using text from different parts, in the drive of establishing a rhetorical analysis of the book.  The fact that the assignment is a journal from your point of view gives you the ability to choose and analyze it in any manner you wish, and this is helpful to you and your quest.

    the easiest thing to do when rhetorical analyzing novels is annotating pages, and uses the authors own words to figure out his/ her tone, syntax and diction. just pick a passage and start analying! It works for me
