Question:
In "A Raisin in the Sun", why does Mama not fully share her family's excitement about the check?
This concerns the beginning of the play i believe

Posted by kkosach on Sunday August 23, 2009 at 9:03 PMMama is not as excited about the check for a few reasons, the first being that the whole reason she is getting the money is due to her husband's untimely death. She has already decided to pay Beneatha's tuition, meaning a good portion of the money is already spoken for. Mama is not at all supportive of the liquor store idea Walter has, and is not looking forward to having to explain to him why she does not want to invest in that project. She does not want to crush his dreams, but feels much more justified in buying a house for the family.
