   Ruth goes to the doctor's office to confirm her pregnancy.  It is critical to the development of the play for several reasons.  The first would be that as the family is enduring challenges, there is a sense that something is about to happen which will be definitive in the family's situation.  The waiting for the insurance money, the predicament that begins the discussion of the move, as well as the general feeling of change which seems to stir in the household is amplified with the pregnancy.  Given the uncertain level of where the family is and where it is going, the static approach to Ruth's pregnancy would be to get an abortion.  Yet, symbolic of the new start the family is going to have with the move to Clybourne Park, she keeps the baby the baby with the hopes that a new beginning is present on multiple levels.
