The Younger family has to share a bathroom with other tenants who live in the apartment. This crowded bathroom is not simply having to be shared by other families, but within the family, there is constant traffic as Walter and Ruth are joined with Walter's Sister and Mother and their son, Travis. Additionally, Travis sleeps on the sofa as there are only two bedrooms in the apartment, and the furniture seems worn, indicating that there might be a great deal of traffic in the small quarters. The difficulty with which Ruth awakens and begins her morning routine is one caused by pregnancy, meaning there will be greater crowding in the apartment.
