David Herbert Lawrence was born on September 11, 1885, in the mining town of Eastwood in the English Midlands. His parents were John Arthur Lawrence, a coal miner and the model for Walter Morel in Sons and Lovers (1913), and Lydia Beardsall Lawrence, a former schoolteacher and the model for Gertrude Morel in the same novel. Lawrence grew up in Eastwood and lived there for twenty years.
