Rain | Characters
Among the characters, Dr. Macphail stands as a foil to the fanatical Davidson. Macphail disapproves of Davidson's use of his influence against the prostitute Sadie Thompson and disagrees silently with Davidson's view of the world. He attempts without success to moderate the clergyman's actions, but finds that Davidson has stronger clout with the American governor.
But Davidson's zeal is his own undoing. Having arranged to send Sadie back to San Francisco where she faces imprisonment, he decides to save her soul. Visiting her room, he prays with her hour after hour.
