Paul and his friends realize how far they have come. They are no longer as optimistic and upbeat as the new arrivals are. They have seen the horrors of war and no longer think it is a good thing or even a winnable thing. The new arrivals strike them as naive. They are now seasoned veterans.
Does that help? Remember the time period. Everyone was gung ho about war at the time. No one realized just how awful it would really be. First time mechanized/total warfare came into play.
