I think the hardest part was in fact the time he spent away from the front. When he tried to fit back into society he felt like an outsider. An example is when he could not read his own books that he cherished before. I also believe the only thing that could possiblyconsole him was being around other men at the front. They all related to one another and were bound by the horrors of the war.

This is an enormous question, but I'll try to give you some pointers toward some of the main ideas.Paul and his friends truly believed Kantorek when the teacher first gave them the line about being the "Iron Youth," which is why so many of them voluntarily signed up to fight, and which is why they all pressured Behm to go along with them to the recruitment office. They buy all the propaganda about Germany just protecting itself from...

It is clear that the boys joined up at the intense urging of their schoolmaster, Kantorek; as well, the adults in their lives, such as their parents, all stressed the glory of joining up and the duty that the boys had to their country. It is telling that the first one to die, Joseph Behm, was the one who held out the longest from being convinced to join. The fact that Remarque makes this point is evidence that he believes the youths were...

All Quiet on the Western Front is a coming of age story of the youth of the 1910's. The students, Paul and his classmates, Muller, Kropp and Leer joined the army at the urging of their schoolmaster, Kantorek. The schoolmaster is among those of the older generation who encouraged the boys to sign up for the army. Many adults, parents included, encouraged enlistment, even going so far as to call the boys cowards if they did not. As the...

Himmelstoss serves as a tyrant-like figure who seeks personal pleasure from seeing those placed into his basic training platoon suffer greatly. He claims that everything they are doing is due to the war effort--a preparatory push for all of the things they are likely to see and experience while at the front line. However, he does something inappropriate later in the novel (around chapter 5) in which his commanding officers dismiss him from his...

I agree with both answers, but would add that AQWF also was an embarrassment for Germany. The soldiers were abandoned for all intents and purposes, left to use machinery that was actually killing their own soldiers: shells were being fired from guns that were so ineffectual and/or broken down they would land on the German soldiers and not even make it to the enemy territory. The novel describes the deplorable conditions that the soldiers...

Also important is Remarque's position that if the generals and other higher-ups who are responsible for sending boys off to die were themselves forced to actually fight in the trenches, the war would be over very quickly. War gives power, ultimate power to decide the fate of others, to men who have no problem sending boys off against insurmountable odds to die terrible deaths.

The change in Himmelstoss' character also serves to illustrate the difference between the empty talk of those not actually fighting in the trenches, and the nightmarish reality for those who do. Himmelstoss is all bark and no bite; but then again, very few have a bite left for very long once they are exposed to the insane conditions of the front lines.

There was a black and white version in 1930 and another more modern one in 1979. I think there is even a newer one. Please post the question again with which version.

The young Germans enlisted with eagerness and enthusiasm with a desire to proclaim their support for the Fatherland and of a master race. The realities of war were in sharp contrast. Remarque’s most clear example of that came in the scene where Paul was forced to stay in a...
