The Bennets influence their daughters' characters in positive and negative ways. As Darcy points out to Lizzy's discomfort, the younger daughters have been indulged, and act inappropriately. This is due to a combination of their father's sloth—he retreats to his library and doesn't actively raise them—and their mother's, well, silliness. She oversteps good manners, and her daughters, especially Lydia, follow her astray. On the positive side, their father gave Jane and Lizzy room to let their minds grow, encouraging them to be thoughtful.
