A catalyst, in chemical terms, is a substance that initiates a reaction without being affected.  Mrs. Bennet finds out that an eligible bachelor has moved in next door (Mr. Bingley) and is determined to have one of her daughters become his love interest.  When Miss Bingley, Mr. Bingley's sister, realizes that Mr. Darcy is becoming intereseted in Elizabeth she does everything that she can to keep Mr. Bingley and Jane separated so that she (Miss Bingley) can continue to persue Mr. Darcy without competition.  In short, Mrs. Bennet acts as a catalyst to get Jane and Bingley together while Miss Bingley acts as a catalyst to keep them apart.
