In 1885 Woodrow Wilson married Ellen Axson, a Georgian lady who was devoted to him totally in spite of his seemingly poor prospects as a graduate student. Their marriage was a grand love affair, and the couple had three daughters. Ellen Wilson made her own clothes and dresses for her daughters during the years of financial stringency, and continued doing so long after Wilson had achieved success and financial security. A woman ahead of her time, Ellen Wilson did not confine herself to domestic matters. She was involved in most of her husband's business transactions and reviewed his lectures and articles prior to their publication. Ellen Wilson died of kidney failure on August 6, 1914. The couple's eldest daughter, Margaret Wilson, assumed duties as White House hostess.
