Wilson enrolled in Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, in 1873, but he withdrew the next year complaining of digestive disorders that would bother him on and off throughout his life. He soon enrolled in the College of New Jersey, later renamed Princeton. Wilson's oratorical abilities soon became evident. He won several public speaking contests, founded the Liberal Debating Club, and became managing editor of the campus newspaper, the Princetonian. Enrolling at the University of Virginia Law School upon graduation in 1879, he withdrew due to ill health in his second year. He passed the bar anyway in 1882. Following his long-standing interest in U.S. government, Wilson pursued graduate work at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he earned one of the first PhDs in political science in 1886.
