Post-presidential Years

Of William Henry Harrison's 10 children only one followed in his father's footsteps by pursuing a career in politics. His fifth child, John Scott Harrison (1804–78), was elected as a Whig representative from Ohio to the U.S. House of Representatives. He served from 1853 to 1857 during the Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth Congresses. John Scott Harrison was also the only man to be both the son of one president and the father of another. His son, Benjamin Harrison (1833–1901), was elected the 23d president of the United States in 1888.
