Family Life

In 1807 Van Buren married a young woman, Hannah Hoes, who was a distant relative and had been an acquaintance since childhood. Their first son, Abraham, was born while the newlyweds were still living in Kinderhook, New York. The following year the new family moved to nearby Hudson, a growing town, for two reasons: to accommodate Martin's rapidly advancing legal career and to live near schools better than the small village schoolhouse Martin had attended.

Three more sons followed during the family's years in Hudson, but the last died in infancy. In 1816 the Van Buren family moved to the state capital, Albany, where their fourth and last surviving son was born. After suffering through two years of failing health, Hannah Van Buren died at the age of 35 in 1819, probably of tuberculosis.
