Early Life

In 1782, at the time of Martin Van Buren's birth, the town of Kinderhook, in upstate New York, was home to seven families of Van Burens. While predominantly Dutch in descent, the inhabitants of Kinderhook were generally well-established and thoroughly American. Martin's father, Abraham Van Buren, was a tavernkeeper who had inherited a number of interests from his various relatives, including a farm and six slaves, and he and his family were kept busy maintaining their various resources.

When he was 39, Abraham married a widow named Maria Hoes Van Alen, who at the time was raising three children of her own. Martin was the third of five children born to Abraham and Maria.
