The John Tyler Administration

In his strenuous demand to be considered more than merely an "acting president," John Tyler set the precedent that all subsequent vice presidents have followed in assuming the presidency. In an administration known mostly for political paralysis, Tyler nonetheless guided the nation through a successful period in foreign relations, and—for better or for worse—settled the question of Texas annexation just prior to leaving office.
