Tyler Administration - Education
Education
After attending a rural school near Greenway, in Virginia, Tyler left in 1802—at the young age of 12—to attend the preparatory school of the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia. In 1804 he enrolled in the college itself. The curriculum was dominated by classical languages and English literature, but Tyler was also introduced to history and political economy. His academic career was very successful, and he graduated in 1807 at the age of 17.
After returning to Charles City County, Virginia, Tyler, already bent on pursuing a political career, began the study of law under his father. When his father became governor of Virginia in 1809, Tyler studied in the Richmond, Virginia, office of Edmund Randolph, a brilliant lawyer who had been U.S. attorney general under President George Washington. Tyler was admitted to the bar in 1809.
