After deciding not to run for the presidency again, Truman retired from office in January 1953. He then set to work on his memoirs, which were published as Year of Decisions (1955) and Years of Trial and Hope (1956). He also supervised the building of the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, making it one of the first presidential libraries (whose role in preserving political records was endorsed by Congress in 1955). He remained active in Democratic politics, supporting Adlai Stevenson's unsuccessful bid for office in 1956 against Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy's successful bid in 1960. The Kennedys invited him to a White House reception in 1961, where he was treated as the grand old man of the Democratic Party and entertained the guests on the White House's Steinway grand piano (which was later given to him by President Nixon).
