Introduction

Harry Truman grew up among farmers in small Missouri towns. A struggling businessman during his 20s and 30s, he entered local politics in his mid-thirties and quickly became a success. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 1934, Truman supported President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, and developed a national reputation as a representative of the common people. Elected to serve as vice president for Roosevelt's fourth term in office, he succeeded to the presidency after Roosevelt's death in April 1945. As president, Truman became known for his tireless work, insistence on a strong U.S. foreign policy, and attempt to extend the domestic policies of the New Deal.
