During the nineteenth century the United States grew and expanded by pushing westward, on the North American continent, but the country did not seem to be interested in a world empire such as Great Britain's. However, by the end of the century the nation was poised to go further. The United States began creating an empire far from her North American shores with the acquisition of Hawaii in the early 1890s. After the Spanish-American War that realm grew when Spain ceded the Philippine Islands, Guam, and Puerto Rico to the United States. In 1899 Germany and the United States each took a slice of the Samoan Islands.
There are various reasons why the United States became concerned about a far-ranging empire. Some were economic.
