On his 22nd birthday, October 27, 1880, Roosevelt married Alice Hathaway Lee who was 19. On February 12, 1884, Lincoln's birthday, Alice Roosevelt gave birth to a daughter also named Alice. Two days later, on St. Valentine's Day, tragedy struck the Roosevelt's home when both Roosevelt's mother and wife died on the same day.

Roosevelt married for the second time on December 2, 1886, in London, England. With his second wife, Edith Kermit Carow, Roosevelt had five children: Theodore Jr., Kermit, Ethel, Archibald, and Quentin. If Roosevelt can be called the United States's first modern president, then his wife was the country's first modern first lady. One of her many innovations was making Isabelle "Belle" Hagner the first social secretary ever for a president.
