The Taylor Administration Legacy
Taylor died after suddenly becoming ill. Public reaction was one of sorrow mixed with surprise, because his illness had been so brief. On July 13, 1850, an estimated 100,000 thronged Washington, D.C., especially along the funeral route.
While Taylor resolved potential conflicts with Britain and France during his administration, he left the issue of slavery to his vice president and successor Millard Fillmore. Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky had offered a series of compromise measures between the North and the South in the form of what was called the Omnibus Bill, a precursor to his Compromise of 1850 (See also, Domestic Issues). Several observers believe that Taylor's death on July 9, 1850, was fortuitous for the nation because Fillmore had supported the Omnibus Bill, which, although defeated, led to the passage of a series of separate bills called the Compromise of 1850.
