During a hot Fourth of July celebration in Washington, President Taylor spent two hours in the broiling sun listening to Independence Day oratory. Upon his return to the White House, he drank freely of iced water and chilled milk while eating cherries and other raw fruits and vegetables. He did this in spite of warnings concerning the Asiatic cholera epidemic. The president soon fell ill and eventually died about 10:30 P.M. on July 9, 1850. At noon on July 10, Taylor's vice president, Millard Fillmore, officially became president when he took the oath of office in the chamber of the House of Representatives.
