On the frontier Zachary Taylor had little formal education. At an early age Elisha Ayer tutored the future president. Ayer testified that his protégé was "quick in learning and still patient in study" (Hamilton, p. 28). Later Kean O'Hara accepted Taylor as one of his pupils. Taylor biographer Holman Hamilton stated that Taylor's correspondence "bears eloquent evidence that the instruction of Ayer and O'Hara did not fall on barren soil" for Taylor's hand was "bold and firm, the mode of expression clear and forceful, if lacking in grace."
