Changes in the U.S. Government

Congress established the Department of the Interior, originally called the Home Department, on March 3, 1849, two days before Zachary Taylor became president. This new department brought under one head the Office of the Census, the Office of Indian Affairs, and the General Land Office. Taylor named the first secretary of the interior—Thomas Ewing of Ohio.
