After he lost the 1912 election, Taft retired from politics when he returned to Yale University to become Kent Professor of Constitutional Law. Although he continued to teach as a law professor until 1921, he also found time to serve as joint chairman of the National Labor Board during World War I (1914–18).
On June 30, 1921, President Warren Harding named Taft chief justice of the United States. He presided over the Supreme Court until his health forced him to retire in February 1930, just one month before his death on March 8, 1930.
