The Ronald Reagan Administrations
President Ronald Reagan is best remembered for being more aggressive than his predecessors in confronting the Soviet Union. He built up all departments of the U.S. military and took a hard line on negotiations. At home he cut taxes and government spending in the hope that these changes, the "supply-side revolution," would enhance economic growth. His popularity assured reelection in 1984, but his second administration was hamstrung by congressional investigations into Iran-Contra arms and hostages deals made by his national security advisers.
