Leaving Washington in January 1989 at the end of his second term, Ronald Reagan retired to his ranch in the hills above Santa Barbara, California. He had often vacationed there during his presidential years, and the estate became known as the "Western White House." Reagan, like all other recent presidents, was eager to establish a presidential library and supervised its construction in nearby Simi Valley. Already in his late seventies when he left Washington, however, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, which afflicts the memory. He and Nancy Reagan helped publicize the plight of Alzheimer's disease patients in the early and mid-1990s, contributing money to research into corrective medicines and lending their names and influence to organizations concerned with Alzheimer patients' special needs.
