The Polk Administration Legacy
Polk tried to solve the slavery question in a way that would preserve national and party harmony, but to no avail. By the end of the 1840s slavery had become the most burning issue in U.S. politics, a status that it retained for the next 25 years. In July 1848, in anticipation of the upcoming presidential election, the Democratic Party officially splintered. Dissident Democrats joined with Conscience Whigs and the Liberty Party to form the Free Soil Party. They nominated Martin Van Buren as their candidate and ran on a platform dedicated to the exclusion of slavery from the West.
